2019 SBC Football Boilerplate on the Hourglass - records, projections and more

Sunbelt, Funbelt - however you want to frame it up, the Group of Five southern league has become a league that is absolutely relevant in the G5 and puts guys in the next level.

Appalachian State is the class of the SBC kingdom and even though they have a new king in Eli Drinkwitz, don’t expect the results to change. App State is the standard in this conference and some may argue they are one of the standards in the Group of Five. You would be pleasantly surprised to know though, this team isn’t the most talented team in the Fun Belt.

While the talent is very close from spots 1-6, Troy or Arkansas State have actually out recruited App. State and Georgia Southern is on the come up - quick. We pegged Georgia Southern on the money a year ago and were laughed out of the state of Georgia this time last year.

But - talent alone can’t win you a championship and when you look at quarterback play, App. State has the guy this year in the SBC.

Zac Thomas is learning a new system this year, but he is the guy in this conference this year. But - he isn’t the only guy as Shai Werts from Georgia Southern could be the top dual threat quarterback in the league as he accounted for over 20 touchdowns last year.
Georgia STate, LA Monroe and Troy all have viable options at quarterback, while the rest of the conference is breaking in new guys in 2019.

Coaching wise we referenced Drinkwitz, but there are some other really good coaches in the league.

Blake Anderson continues to just keep rolling at Arkansas State, and again what Chad Lunsford is doing over at Georgia Southern is amazing. If he keeps on his trajectory in our system, they will be the team to beat in the future in the Sun Belt.

Chip Lindsey gets his first shot at Troy in 2019 and several other new faces will be on the sidelines this fall like Jake Spavital at Texas State. Spavital is considered one of the better offensive minds in the game so it will be interesting to see how long it takes him to get Texas State up and running.

Steve Campbell is in a crucial year two at South Alabama and Shawn Elliott could feel major heat at Georgia State if he doesn’t produce this fall.

Lots of changes have happened in a calendar year in the SBC, but we still have App. State as the team to beat and again winning the Fun Conference of the Group of Five.
